The Telling Trees Present: We Gather Together - Stone County’s Centennial Play

May 10, 2016

We Gather Together

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Stone County has a 100 year story to tell and will be presenting it as a play, celebrating its centennial, on May 19 and 21 at 7 pm and Sunday, May 22 at 2 pm in the Malone Hall Theater on the MGCCC Campus in Perkinston.  Advance tickets are on sale now, online at stonecounty.com.  Theater tickets are $10 each for adults and $5 each for children under 12.  Children under 3 get in free.  If you want to wait to get your tickets at the door, they will be $15 each for adults.

On Thursday, opening night, there is a very special dinner and theater option at 5:30 pm.  Dinner will be served at the Wesley Foundation Barn before the play.  Tickets for the dinner and play are $25 each for adults and $20 each for children under 12.

The beginnings of what is now the celebratory play started more than a decade ago as educators and leaders in the county’s communities realized that there was no information or program  on our regional ecosystem and its very special centerpiece, the longleaf pine as well as the many species that are dependent on its habitat.  As a result, a movement was started to gather the county’s timber stories.

The Telling Trees project was born from these early efforts and to create a sense of place and pride in our communities.  Knowing who we are and why we are here not only involved knowing and recognizing the importance of our ecosystem and sharing that knowledge but also included knowing the history of our communities and their founding families.

So with the firm belief that our community deserves to know its story and the desire to share that story; individual stories were gathered together and handed over to the award winning playwright, Tanya Hays.  In her expert hands, the stories were formalized and readied to be shared with a larger audience.  Community members are the stars of the play and it is directed by Stone County native Daisha Walker.

Stone County turns 100 in 2016 and will be celebrating our centennial all year with events and activities that highlight our past, our citizens and a look to our future. Come join us as Stone County honors its 100 years and plans for the next 100 years.
