Reflecting on Stone County’s history, present and future…

Discover how Stone County changed in the 20th Century.

1896 – The Gulf and Ship Island Railroad (G&SI) was constructed to open a vast expanse of southern yellow pine forests for commercial harvest. In spite of economic uncertainty, entrepreneurs William H. Hardy and Joseph T. Jones successfully completed railroad construction from Gulfport to Hattiesburg and points beyond. The railroad stimulated the development of a seaport and the expansion of cities along its route.

Finkbine Lumber Company sawmill established Stone County as a leader in timber production.

1902 – Finkbine Lumber Company completed construction of a new double-band sawmill at Wiggins. The new mill was able to produce 125,000 board feet of lumber per day making it the largest sawmill at the time. It had five dry kilns, a large planing mill, and a shed for storing finished lumber. The mill sawed longleaf pine logs into dimensional lumber and construction timbers. Finkbine Lumber Company conducted business in both domestic and export markets. The shipping port in Gulfport, Mississippi served as their export hub.

We are soaring into our future.

Rooted in a rich history, technology is the future of Stone County. Advancements in the timber industry will create sustainable products from the vast resources of our forests. Access to medical technology and an enhanced healthcare system make a healthier community. Our future in Mississippi’s Aerospace and Defense Industry corridor is soaring. As we honor our history and prepare for a vibrant future, we celebrate our Crossroads.
